Lansdown · Bath
A small courtyard with architectural calm.
A restrained city garden where warm stone, clipped structure and loose planting make a compact footprint feel composed rather than crowded.
The brief
What the garden needed to do.
Create a proper place to sit and eat outside
Reduce the visual clutter of several mismatched surfaces
Add privacy without making the courtyard feel enclosed
Keep maintenance realistic for a busy household
The challenge
The existing courtyard felt hard and exposed, with too many surface changes and nowhere that felt comfortable enough to stay.
Our response
We simplified the material palette, created one confident seating zone and used multi-layer planting to soften boundaries without stealing useful floor space. A narrow change in paving direction makes the garden feel wider, while evergreen structure keeps the courtyard composed through winter.
PaletteBath-toned stone · textured gravel · dark timber · evergreen structure · seasonal perennials
The finished garden
A space that looks better because it works better.
The garden now reads as one room rather than a collection of edges. Hard materials provide enough structure to feel architectural, but the planting is deliberately loose so the courtyard never becomes too formal.
That is the test we use on every project: the garden should be easier to understand, more useful day to day and more connected to the property than it was before.
